iPad Applications Neglect the African American Community?

The Apple iPad, which sold over 240,000 units prior to its April 3rd launch date, comes pre-installed with several media applications, including such magazines as Time, GQ, Wired, Sports Illustrated, and Glamour. But as Lawrence Watkins, CEO of The Great Black Speakers Bureau points out, “one category of magazine remains absent so far: those that appeal to an African American audience.” Watkins rattles off titles such as Ebony, Essence, and Black Enterprise as “notably missing from the list of media apps being offered for the Apple iPad.” By ignoring this demographic, Apple is missing out on the estimated $1 trillion spent annually by black consumers.

Apple Doesn’t Want Third Party Advertisers To Know Who You Are

In a recent announcement to iPhone developers, Apple announced that using the API that allows them to pinpoint a user’s location primarily for advertising purposes is now prohibited. Though this appears to be an example of Apple protecting their user’s privacy, suspicions of Apple devising their own location-based advertising service are beginning to surface, especially with Apple’s recent acquisition of the mobile advertising firm Quattro Wireless.

iPAD Having an Impact on Wireless Carriers

Apple’s iPAD release and AT&T’s announcement that they will be investing over $2 billion to expand and improve their broadband data network arrived so closely to one another that it has left some to wonder whether the two are related.
