Facebook to Change Fan Page Terminology

Facebook will soon be changing their fan page terminology- instead of clicking “Become a Fan,” users will be prompted to “Like” the page. Though this change may seem unbelievably minor, Facebook claims it will change the way users interact with brands, as people already click “Like” up to twice as much as they click “Become a Fan.”

Why Your Next Business Move Should Be Online

As retailers continue to close down their stores in the midst of this recession, online retailers continue to see growth. This of course can be partially attributed to the popularity of social networks, as a March 2009 Knowledge Networks study concluded that “10% to 24% of U.S. social media users utilized social networks when making purchase decisions about a wide range of products and services.” An interesting technique that some retailers are beginning to use is to go beyond implementing an online store by taking further steps to integrate their products with social networks. A great example is Victoria’s Secret who held a contest on their Facebook fan page (VS has over 6 MILLION fans) that allowed fans to vote on three different Facebook-inspired panty designs. The winning design reads “You Like This” with the Facebook “Like” icon (Above).

What’s All the BUZZ About?

This past Tuesday, Google released a new service called Buzz. Buzz is integrated into your Gmail account, and allows you to share photos, updates and videos, putting the new service in direct competition with the social media giants, Facebook and Twitter. On another note, Facebook announced on Wednesday that they are improving the live chat service on their site by allowing it to be integrated into other services, like AIM, AOL’s instant messaging network. Ironically, both Google and Facebook experienced negative user reactions this past week. After round one of the social media heavy weights, no clear winner is in sight.
