A Dynasty!

Apple will host an event at its Cupertino, Calif. headquarters on April 8th to demonstrate what it calls “the future of the iPhone OS.” Could Apple announce that they are unveiling the iPhone OS 4.0, the next generation of the company’s smartphone operating system?  The announcement comes a few days after the April 3rd release of the iPad, Apple’s tablet PC, which reportedly sold 300,000 units by midnight on that date. In an April 5th statement, the company suggested that more than one million apps for the iPad had already been downloaded, along with 250,000 e-books.  Stay tuned to see if Apple will release another game changer.

iPad Applications Neglect the African American Community?

The Apple iPad, which sold over 240,000 units prior to its April 3rd launch date, comes pre-installed with several media applications, including such magazines as Time, GQ, Wired, Sports Illustrated, and Glamour. But as Lawrence Watkins, CEO of The Great Black Speakers Bureau points out, “one category of magazine remains absent so far: those that appeal to an African American audience.” Watkins rattles off titles such as Ebony, Essence, and Black Enterprise as “notably missing from the list of media apps being offered for the Apple iPad.” By ignoring this demographic, Apple is missing out on the estimated $1 trillion spent annually by black consumers.

Growing Demand for iPad in the Business Market

Though the iPad’s capabilities range from work activities to play, recent research shows that a much higher than expected demand for the tablet comes from businesses. According to Needham & Co. analyst Charlie Wolf, “many companies and employees ordered the iPad to be used as a tool for companies’ communication, to keep employees productive while they are on the ground.” An explanation for this, according to Wolf, is that the “applications prove to be more diversified than it was originally thought.” Backing up Wolf’s statement is a study commissioned by Zogby International, which reported that “more than half of mobile users said they would use an iPad to work outside the office.” Another study, this one by TechRepublic, claims that “10 of 12 executives said the iPad or other instrument of this type can be useful in a company.” Would your business and/or your employees benefit from office iPads?
